i took my laptop in for repairs

Why do we need to pluralize "repair" in this context?

I took my laptop in for repairs.

What if I use the singular form, does that mean its is grammatically incorrect?

You don't need to use "repairs" – in fact my first thought before I saw your question was that I would use "repair." Either will be correct, but I think you'll find "repair" more frequently used.
