Hi,

MANY signs point to a growing historical consciousness among the American people. I trust that this is so.

(This comes from my English reading material Folly’s Antidote by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.. It originates from The New York Times.)

I think "so" refers to the blue part, i.e. I trust that this is that many signs point to...people, right? But I feel it a little odd.

Thanks in advance!

What else could it possibly refer to?

I trust that this is so.
this = [that there is] a growing historical consciousness among the American people

EDIT: I’ve just realised that you may have meant it refers directly to the word “this”, which in turn refers back to the previous sentence. If so, that’s right.

Many signs indicate that there is a growing historical consciousness.
Some people may doubt the accuracy of those signs, but I, on the other hand, am confident that what they indicate is true.
