    I think it's more acceptable not to repeat the subject after a coordinating conjunction. In the OP sentence I would definitely repeat the subject.

    John was pleased, but (he) had to make some changes.
    I was pleased, though I had to make some changes.

    John was pleased, though had to make some changes.:cross:
