¡Hola a todos!

¿Alguien podría explicarme el significado y uso de was en esta frase?

Mr. Forrester said i was to give it to you when you asked for him.

    El Sr. Forrester dijo que te lo diera cuando...

    "El señor Forrester dijo que yo te lo diese cuando lo pidiese."

    This is reported speech. Forrester said (past) I was (past).
    Direct speech:
    Mr. Forrester said to me: "You are to give it to her/him when s/he asks for it."

    No hay problema con decir "...when you asked for him". Es cuando la persona pregunta por el Sr. Forrester que le dan el paquete (o lo que sea la cosa "it".)
    Estaba suponiendo que lo que se iba a entregar al Sr Forrester era un objeto, no una persona.
    Si se trataba de un esclavo varón sí se podría decir "I was to give him to you when you asked for him."
    También hay otra posibilidad, que no se me había ocurrido, y quizá sea precisamente el caso aquí:
    El Sr Forrester me dijo que yo te lo diera cuando preguntases por él (por el Sr Forrester).

    What?????
    Mr. Forrester said I was to give it (a package, a letter, an object) to you when you asked for him, i.e. for Sr. Forrester.
    No reason whatsoever to think there are slaves involved.
