I would crouch down, yelling at him to get away from there

Thanks for viewing my thread. While I am reading a book, I found below sentence not understood fully.
What is the usage of would in this context. "I would crouch down, yelling at him to get away from there
In this context, How can I understand the usage of would? Is this the willingness in the past or what?

Please help me understand "would" clearly.

    The preceding sentence is: The dog was going crazy, yapping every time someone walked by the window.

    'Would' there indicates what the narrator was in the habit of doing when the dog started going crazy.
