I would rather = I had rather?

    Yes, both are possible, though 'had rather' seems rather old-fashioned to me. I think these days we'd say 'would rather' if we said it in full.

    Strange, usage of "would rather" according to 2 Google searches heavily outnumbers "had rather".

    Personally I use would; at least I think I do..... :)

    If "I had rather + do something" is correct, then you would get comfortable with this expression if you drew a parallel with "I had better + do something". We can see that "rather" and "better" are quite close in meaning.
