Hy, I'm Marco, watching "When Harry met Sally", I realized I have some problem with Would/Whould have...

This is a quotation from the movie:

"I am 26 and can't remember the name of the girl I was such good friends with I wouldn't get involved with her boyfriend."

It refers to the past, so why it is not "...I wouldn't have got involved with her boyfriend." ?

  • There is no conditional here: would is here the past tense of will, which is here synonymous with consent.
    The relative clause is
I was such good friends with her that I refused to (wouldn't) get involved with her boyfriend.
