Hi everyone! I need a little help here.
I would like to have a tattoo with this quote, but written in futhark. The problem is I dont have anyone who can help me with translation. Google translated this as: "ekki vera því miður vertu betri", but i think thats a really poor translation.

  • I can't comment on the translation, but it is certainly not futhark. It looks more like modern Icelandic, which is what you would expect from Google.

This website suggests "ᛞᛟ ᚾᛟᛏ ᛒᛖ ᛊᛟᚱᚱᛃ ᛒᛖ ᛒᛖᛏᛏᛖᚱ" for Elder Futhark, but quite honestly the best advice I can give is not to have a tatoo in a language you do not properly understand yourself - it's just asking for trouble.

    Sorry :)

    Ah, I see. Fair enough!

Well you should be able to get a reliable Icelandic translation at least. Will you do a letter by letter transliteration, so you will effectively have a runic version of modern Icelandic?

Yeah probably, but i will seek help for someone more uh informed also. Dont want some gibberish all over my body after all

It is a difficult phrase to translate, because "being sorry" is not formulated with the verb to be in Icelandic. That makes the contrast difficult.

The best is probably something like "Ekki sjá (bara) eftir hlutunum, gerðu betur", but it is not as pithy as the English phrase.

There are many ways to say "I'm sorry" in Icelandic depending on context: afsakaðu/afsakið, fyrirgefðu, því miður, mér þykir þetta leitt, mér þykir það miður, mér þykir fyrir því, ég sé eftir því, ég samhryggist, ..., none of which easily contrast with "be better", which could be something like vertu betri, gerðu betur, stattu þig betur or bættu þig, again depending on context.
