Icelandic: tungl = moon [what is the etymology?]

    I just learned that moon is tungl in Icelandic while the mainland scandinavian languages have words related to moon: Danish måne.
    I was wondering where the Icelandic word come from.

    Well, it's also máni. Google 'tungl' and 'wiktionary'. Tungl is from Proto-Germanic and has simply not survived in the other languages.

    You can find tungel in Swedish poetry or dialects, but it is almost extinct.
