    Correct, the formal form is "were". However, as much as I like this form, nowadays it is hard to find someone who uses "were" in speech. It is doomed to history to be used as a literary form. People are using "was" in everyday speech and even in many magazines and newspapers.

    In fact, the sentence is for an MBA application essay, so I will put "were" ;)
