Dear all,

She was having a fight with her boyfriend, and was determined to never talk to him. When she saw him at school one day, she almost blurted out she was sorry to him. She thought if she said she was sorry she (would have been speaking / would have spoken) to him.

I made those up. I think that would have spoken would be better understood. Is there any situation in which would have been speaking would make sense?
