The quotation comes from Charlotte Brontë – Jane Eyre (Chap. 34) | Genius

Quotation: “You have introduced a topic on which our natures are at variance—a topic we should never discuss: the very name of love is an apple of discord between us. If the reality were required, what should we do? How should we feel? My dear cousin, abandon your scheme of marriage—forget it.”

Context: Jane refused St. John’s proposal.

Hi everyone! I don’t quite understand the bold part. My guess is as below. Is it correct?

“if the reality were required” strikes me as subjunctive mood.

The sentence => if love were really required, what would we do?
In fact, love is not required if I support your vocation as your sister or comrade. If love were really required, what would we do?
