I'll check it, ma'am.

If you ordered your secretary to verify whether some payment has been posted or not, would this reply be correct?

    I'll check it, ma'am.

I just want to know if check alone is enough.

It sounds a little odd to me, although I would understand what the person meant. "I'll check into it" would make more sense to me.

Thanks James, it sounded odd to me too. :)

I agree with James. "I'll check on it" would also work.

Or "check on it." Or "check up on it." But I don't find "check it" to be "odd."

AskLang's response is much better than the alternative suggestions ... ... in my world :)

I certainly wouldn't check into, on, or up on it.

    I'd really expect a simple response, "I'll check..." :)

Small dialogues such as this are really very difficult to explain, not least because native speakers rarely pay attention to them.

    Agree :).

I'll check on it would be my preferred response.
