Immerse in/steep in

Good evening,

would these two words have the same meaning in the following sentence?-

-Up to the present day, I have had the chance to meet people from all around the world immersing myself in their cultures.
-Up to the present day, I have had the chance to meet people from all around the world steeping myself in their cultures.

Is there any slight difference?

They are very similar; steeping is a little stronger than immersing.

PS, "Up to the present day" is quite formal, "So far" is less formal.
