Hello everybody I came across a phrase and I couldn’t make of its meaning. What does “immune to tragedy (off something)” mean?

Where did you see this phrase, and what is the entire sentence?
Tough Micheal Jordan was unstoppable on the court, he wasn't immune to tragedy off it: in August 1993, his father, James Jordan, was murdered.

On the court he was unstoppable, but off the court (in private life) he was not immune to tragedy (i.e. he was susceptible to tragedy / a tragic event occurred in his private life).
