in/by turns

What's the difference between "in turns" and "by turns'?

They sang songs in turns.
They sang songs by turns.

Some reference books say the second one means repitition. For example, there are altogether 5 people (A B C D E), if they sang songs in turns , they did it once (just from A to E); but if they did it by turns, A had to sing after E finished his/her performance and another round began.

I need a confirmation about this. Thanks!
