"During rainfall, the raindrops pour down to the surface of earth from a very high level. In the course of falling, these drops cross various layers. All the layers have their own different temperatures. When the raindrops cross a layer that is very cold (below zero degree), the raindrops take the form of sleets."

Is in the course of exchangeable with in the process of? Thank you.

    As this is a scientific text, I think "in the process of" is at least as good as "in the course of". The text goes on to explain part of that process.
