Ici, comme je ne comprends pas bien la phrase, je me demande si in the face of signifie, face à ou malgrè ...

"They were born from a system of segregation that worked to preserve white privilege in the face of a concerted progressive onslaught--a system in which the white community had to collude in order for it to function."

merci de m'aider :)

    Understanding "a concerted progressive onslaught" is the real problem here.

    WR says:
    in the face of
    en dépit de (difficulties);
    face à, devant (opposition, enemy, danger)

    I think that "a concerted progressive onslaught" is a 'danger'/'opposition', therefore I'd use "devant" or "face à".
