in the past

I want to say ''in the past'' in Japanese, but couldn't find anything useful elsewhere. Can I say it like this and is my sentence correct:

English: In the past, people used to lay more emphasis on family bonds than they do now.
Japanese: 過去で人間は今より家族の絆にもっと重点を置かった。

Thanks in advance.
