Indeterminate Studies

What does it mean Indeterminate in the context as follows. The real branch of studies? Or maybe that's a joke?

Indeed, when she had left home to go to Glasgow Caledonian University to take her degree in Indeterminate Studies, she had done so with such a measure of relief that it was visible.

    Its a joke, I think.
Indeterminate studies, clinically, are those that do not produce a conclusive result one way or the other and were therefore of no value. The author would be well aware of this usage.

I would guess that either the writer was making a weak joke about not knowing what subject this 'she' was studying, or it is a typographical error for intermediate studies.

That is the quote from "44 Scotland Street by A. McCall Smith, chapt. 51, p.131.
