What does the below bolded phrase mean ?

Pauline puts a checked cloth on the initial-scarred picnic table standing in the shade of an old oak, and anchors it with a wicker picnic basket against a slight warm breeze.

Source: The Bazaar of Bad Dreams by Stephen King

While I understand that tables can be scarred with marks, I am finding the initial- part confounding. Moreover, how would you anchor a tablecloth on a picnic table with a picnic basket ? For me, you would anchor it with the thingies that you peg them in the corners of the tablecloth.

Thank you

Pauline puts a checked cloth on the initial-scarred picnic table = Pauline puts a checked cloth on the picnic table which has been scarred by people who have carved their initials into it.
