instrument of evil

The quotation comes from Charlotte Brontë – Jane Eyre (Chap. 27) | Genius

Quotation: Gentle reader, may you never feel what I then felt! May your eyes never shed such stormy, scalding, heart-wrung tears as poured from mine. May you never appeal to Heaven in prayers so hopeless and so agonised as in that hour left my lips; for never may you, like me (= Jane), dread to be the instrument of evil to what you wholly love.
Hi everyone! I don't understand "instrument of evil" here. What does it mean?

I think she is calling herself an "instrument of evil" because she had caused sorrow to someone she loved.
