Intermingle oneself

In D.H Lawrence's Sons and Lovers final chapter, the writer describes how Paul is feeling after his mother's death. Paul thinks everything is empty. Then he says the mother has intermingled herself. We have *intermingle with* in dictionary but not intermingle oneself.

She was the only thing that held him up, himself, amid all this. And she was gone, intermingled herself. He wanted her to touch him, have him alongside with her.
