Is use of 'by' required before emphatic pronoun

    "By herself" means "alone, without any help".

    "Herself" just means that she did it, rather than someone else did it. She may have had someone helping her.

    Either way, the sentence implies that Simone had the knowledge to fix the car. The only difference is whether she did it alone.
