^"France," it has been alleged "aquired the empire in a fit of absence of mind".

It has been alleged = "France," certains l'ont fait remarquer, "acquired......"

I am writing an essay and would like quite a formal translation. Would my attempt be accurate, or could anyone offer a better suggestion? Thanks!
