it should have been a league and now it's a pool

    Hi everybody, I don't unnderstand this sentence:

    But it should have been a league and now it's a pool

    They are talking about a rugby match, what do "league" and "pool" mean?

    More context is needed but "league" should be lega, e.g. la lega calcio. "Pool" may be referring to a betting set-up such as totocalcio, but there are also unofficial pools in offices, etc. whereby colleagues bet a certain amount of money on the scores of football games, with the winner generally taking all the money.
