Which is correct:

1-To become a champion takes a lot of hard work.
2-To become a champion it takes a lot of hard work.

I would be more likely to say 2. 1 sounds strange to me, although "becoming a champion takes a lot of hard work" would sound ok.

#2 could also be correct if you wrote it like this: "To become a champion, it takes a lot of hard work."

    (Notice the comma after champion)

I know you didn't quite ask, but in colloquial AE one would be more apt to say:

Becoming a champion takes a lot of work. or
A lot of work is needed to become a champion.

    I am completely comfortable with...

It takes a lot of work to become a champion.
