Hi,

It was hard saying goodbye but we were excited to go to the Cinque Terre!
(Quoted from an online article)

As far as I know, there is a sentence pattern “It’s hard to do something”. Is “ It is hard doing something” sound correct?

Thanks in advance!

It is hard to say goodbye... indicates just this time, or to this person.
It is hard saying goodbye... sounds like there's a deformity in someone's mouth and that makes it difficult for them to say the word 'goodbye' forever.
In the sample sentence you've quoted there, I think you could use either construction.
May I ask if there exists such difference in the native eyes, DonnyB?

    Not really, no.

I suspect that if the scenario were that some sort of physical problem was making it difficult for the person to actually pronounce the word "goodbye", then we'd find a slightly different way of expressing that idea.
