It's thundering like a lion's roaring!
It's thundering like firecrackers' cracking!

Hi,
I try to describe the loud roaring, booming, and cracking of thunders, which are happening right now in this part of the world. I don't think the above sound very good! So, could you shed some light? Thanks.

The first one has potential and with a little adjustment should be apt. Try, 'like a lion's roar' without the 'ing.'

    Thanks, shawnee.

What about these: it's thundering as if a lion is roaring, and it's thundering like the roar of a lion? Do they sound as good?

I would say that they are not as good as the one previously discussed on the grounds that they are too wordy. I think (and I may be alone in this!) that an effective simile should err on the side of being succinct.
