I understand that this is a derogatory term for a Marine. Any suggestions for a Spanish translation/equivalent?

I do think it's an insult. The person describing the officer is a felon, and he's using this expression to describe the detective who is in charge of his case.

Perhaps it's used here to express the idea of "cabeza cuadrada"

Stabler was a Marine, so jarhead probably refers to that. He has a Marine tattoo on his arm.

The equivalent in the spanish navy is "infante de marina" and as you know it was the first marine corps in the world. The direct translation of jarhead can be "cabeza bote", referring to the haircut. In fact, in Spain on the movie 'Jarhead' they translated it that way.
Anyway, they don't use any other terms, they're just infantes de marina.
