Tom is kicking a ball. Jack is climbing a tree. And Mary is jumping rope.

Can we also say ‘Mary is jumping a rope’?

Thanks.

If we were simply combining unrelated words into a sentence, "jumping a rope" would be correct. However, the game "jump rope" and the related phrase "jumping rope" are standard ways to describe this activity. We can't change them.
