My context is from Watership Down and it goes like this:

"Oh, it's only Fiver," said the black-tipped rabbit, "jumping at bluebottles again. Come on, Buckthorn, what were you telling me?"

    Depending on what you mean, the idiomatic expression is either "that's what I was hoping to hear" or "that's what I was expecting to hear."

    If you're listening intently for a specific source of sound or a specific noise, you might say "that's what I was trying to hear."

    These are, of course, my opinions.
