— Tried [Dad] to cut me, once. Big old razor blade. Held it up against my throat. I said, "Daddy, please." Just kept moving back and forth. Like he was sawing down a little tree.

Could you please explain to me the bold part? What kind of moving that was?

    It's very descriptive so it's hard to guess what it is you don't understand.
    A sawing motion.
    He was trying to cut him by moving the razor (a straight razor, not a safety razor) back and forth (repeatedly from side to side) against his throat like he was sawing down a tree (with a manual saw not a chain saw).
    I guess the razor wasn't sharpened or he wasn't pressing hard.

    I see now it was "back and forth" that confused me:)

    "From side to side" would be clearer since it does imply sawing-like motion, wouldn't it?...

    edit: unless he put the blade to the side of his son's neck
