key ... into the keyhole

Hi,
pls what do you do with a key when opening a door? Do you "insert" it into the keyhole or just "put" it there or have you some other more proper expression for that?

I've heard of "turning the key". Can't be very sure though.

Thanks, I think that´s what I do with the key when I´ve already "put" it into the hole. But how about this putting it there?

I would say "insert the key into the keyhole." I think you've got it right already, duden.

I don't think it makes much difference whether you insert or put a key into a keyhole. It sounds slightly more casual and natural to me to say put.

The intoxicated man had considerable difficulty putting his key into the keyhole at his house. His sober companion, wrested the key from his hand and had no difficulty inserting it.
