Hi.

I read a sentence in cambridge.org:

After the diagnosis, getting to know Mary was his salvation. (source: salvation)

I still don't know what it means. Why is Mary "his salvation" after the diagnosis? Is it because "he is ill and will die and only Mary can save him"? Without more context.

To be precise, the sentence doesn't say that Mary was his salvation, but that getting to know Mary was his salvation.

Yes, you've got to imagine what he was saved from. Possibilities include hopelessness, despair, selfishness, bitterness. Getting to know Mary helped him to get out of one of those situations.
