I am confused to understand the sentence I just mentioned whiich is underlined in the latter paragraph.

Serge Lepage, 37 ans, une figure du grand banditisme, a été tué de deux coups de feu alors qu'il rentrait chez lui, dans la soirée de jeudi 29 janvier, à Ville-du-Bois (Essonne). La piste d'un règlement de comptes est privilégiée. Les gendarmes de la section de recherche de Paris ont été chargés de l'enquête.

It means the police appear to favour the lead of a gangland killing.

Essentially, the police suspect that this was a settling of scores/revenge-killing/vendetta/retaliation (rdc) by someone in the criminal underworld, and that's the theory/lead/path (piste) they're currently focusing on/following/chasing/pursuing (privilegier).
