label the punches

    • Could you provide more context please? What exactly do you mean by "punches"?
     
    It's from an instruction about data entry. The whole sentence reads: 'Please be sure to label the punches in the data file if this is not followed.'
     
    I think we need the preceding sentence as well. When I hear 'data' and 'punches' together I think of computer punch-cards, but I'm not sure what labeling them might mean in this context.
     
    When opening a binary file, you need to know certain information to make sure that you're reading it correctly, that each bit (just like a punch on a literal punch card) is being read in the right spot.
