    Yes. A scholarship is
    a gift of money to help a student with his or her studies[countable]awarded a full scholarship.
    In the US it is common for people who excel at a sport (football, hockey, lacrosse etc) to be awarded money so they can attend the college/university awarding the scholarship and enhance the performance of their team in competitions. (It does not denote "academic" merit).
