Is the use of "last out longer" correct?

"Having lost her grandparents to hunger during the siege of Leningrad, she would never throw away even the smallest pieces of bread. She would often say with these small pieces of bread they would have been able to last out longer."
The woman's grandparents indeed died of hunger during the siege of Leningrad.

It's about my grandmother. I can't provide more information. It's just what I often heard as a child. I just rephrased her words.

You could use either "hold out" or "survive" but "last out" doesn't work.

You could say "outlast" or "last longer" though
