laver son linge sale en famille

Senior Member

I came across the translation of the topical phrase here in the wordreference french-english dictionary and was a little surprised when I found out that it gave the following interpretaion:

"air one's dirty laundry in public"

Thus my question: is this correct?

I'm not claiming anything but as far as my understanding of the phrase goes, it should say something like "keep one's family feuds strictly within the household", which is a little contradictory to the notion of having the family laundry day in the front yard.

Am I correct?

Thank you. I'm sorry if I am wrong and all this is but much ado about nothing.

Thank you for your response. Still I kind of fail to understand if the local translation is correct or not. I'm sorry, I just don't get what your "it is correct" actually refers to. Spell it out for me please if it's not too much trouble.

    Thank you
