lay a curve on the ground

Dear foreros,

Please help me translate the highlighted part of the sentence below:

While curves are often used to design road curves, building geometry etc, it is not possible to practically lay or construct a curve on the ground unless it is approximated by a series of straight lines short enough to create an effect of a smooth curve.

Can I say "construir una curva en el terreno"? Are there different words in Spanish for "lay" and "construct" in the above context?

Yes, you can say both "trazar" and "construir". "Construir" is more regarded to building, whereas "trazar" is used in an ampler sense (drawing, etc.).

    Cheers/saludos.

Lairlandesa and Rodsa, thank you both for your suggestions. I think I will go with "construir" because I am talking more of building than of a drawing.
