The curator lay a moment, gasping for breath, taking stock. I am still alive. He crawled out from under the canvas and scanned the cavernous space for someplace to hide.

Can you explain 'lay a moment'?
 
  • No. It is the past tense of the verb lie. The context suggests that he lay on the floor, perhaps after something fell on him. He was lying under a piece of canvas for some reason...
