Le réveil est lent vers la maturité

I would appreciate confirmation / comments / corrections regarding my understanding / translation of the above. It follows the author's story of her experience of motherhood, where she says it wasn't until she was expecting her third child that she was able to shake off the negative advice and comments other people gave her about mothering (e.g. "Whatever you do, it'll be wrong.") I've translated it as:

It takes us a long time to wake up and mature

But I'm not sure whether I've correctly understood or whether my translation is a bit too loose. What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick response ApprentiSorcier. Yes, I think that's better than my suggestion, though it would probably need to be 'It's a slow awakening…'
