leading a cheer at a football game

Hello,

"We can each hop into the middle of a story that the other has begun and continue the other’s train of thought without hesitation. She might begin the story
in which Leslie was leading a cheer at a football game when one of the running backs slipped near the sideline and began careening toward her."

Could you help me understand the meaning of this statement " She might begin the story in which Leslie was leading a cheer at a football game when one of the running backs slipped near the sideline and began careening toward her." Nicholas Sparks "The Wedding"

Thanks!

First off, this is American football. Besides the team on the field, there is usually a team of cheerleaders for each side, whose job it is to keep the crowd energized., with chants (the cheers) and prancing around etc.

Each team uses one of the long sides of the rectangular playing field (the gridiron) for their support staff, and their supporters sit on that side. The cheerleaders are active on their sideline. One of the players (the running back) has slipped and is sliding towards them.
