learning the turf

    Now, that must be an American expression, because in my experience, one is more likely to say "learning the ropes".

    It means to be getting used to something (usually a new job or occupation).
    "Are you an expert climber?"
    "No, I'm still learning the ropes/turf" (= I'm still learning the basics)
    ["Non, je suis toujours en train d'apprendre à me débrouiller"]
