Leave off, stop and give up

HI all

I would like to know the differences between these verbs: leave off, stop and give up

Eg: I left off writing letters, now, I e-mail.
Eg: He gave up smoking
Eg: She stopped thinking about that just two minutes ago.

Leave off is used mostly in British English. In AmEn we would use quit or stop. To give up in this sense means to renounce. That is, you only give up something that you formerly liked. It is also used in the sense of surrendering: She gave up thinking about that.
