This from a article about the vegetation in Danhomè, Gulf of Guinea in the XVII-XIX century. The full text for contact is:

"La région étudiée...est [un] milieu favorisant 'les échanges et les voyages de plantes' et donc une certaine diversité des cultures vivrières"...

Is this about cross-pollenation of plant species of is it more idiomatic than that? Any thoughts and ideas gratefully received.

It is certainly this, yes. Depending on the context, it could also be about people from other area/islands/countries trading plants, if this place was, at this time, a stop-off point for travelers.

Je pense qu'il faut prendre ce texte au sens littéral. Rien n'indique qu'il s'agit de pollinisation.
