I'm not sure how 'let alone... directly' works in the following sentence.

"Personally I don't think anyone's death, let alone that of someone one does not even know directly, should be treated as cause for narcissistic and maudlin self-congratulation."

I would consider it as a great favor if someone gives me its grammatical explanation or its easier expression.
