"This website lets users to play games online."
"This website lets users play games online."

Is the 'to' superfluous?

I let him go.

--I let him TO go.-- ...sounds odd grammatically!

Hello, "This website lets users play games online.", is certainly the correct form, however, "This website allows users to play games online." is also correct.

    Did the syntax evolve gradually?
Initially, was there a 'to' or not?

    Any historic/literary sources/citations...?
