Quelli non credo si chiamino lettori ottici (optical reader, tipo un lettore CD).

To be honest I do not know which part of the eye a scanner would analyse so I followed Roberta's explanation. The iris is the front part of the eye and the retina is the back part. The iris = la iride e the retina e la retina.

To avoid confusion you could use the word OPTICAL scanner as the word optical covers all of the eye cornea/pupil/lense/iris/retina ecc

Exactly, it's just the different part of the eye which is scanned, either iris or retina, but the principle is the same!

Yes, I think Charles is right. I'd avoid the word "optical", because this doesn't necessarily refer to the eye, but just to the use of light. Note that "optics" is the study of light, not of eyes.
